Draft guide · Snake draft

What is a snake draft? The order flips every round.

Updated October 2026

A snake draft is a draft where the pick order reverses every round. Say four friends pick in the order 1, 2, 3, 4. In round two it flips to 4, 3, 2, 1. The person who picks first in round one picks last in round two, so the best spot isn’t the best spot every time.

It works the same whether you draft players or whole teams. In team sports on Windom Sports, you draft whole teams.

How does snake draft order work?

Here’s a four-person draft with two rounds. Each box is one pick, numbered in the order the picks happen.

Snake draft order for four managers over two roundsRound 1 goes left to right: picks 1, 2, 3 and 4 go to managers 1, 2, 3 and 4. Round 2 turns around and goes right to left: pick 5 goes to manager 4, pick 6 to manager 3, pick 7 to manager 2 and pick 8 to manager 1.Manager 1Manager 2Manager 3Manager 4Round 1: left to right1234Round 2: right to left8765
Picks 1 to 4 go to managers 1 to 4. Then the order turns around: manager 4 picks fifth, manager 1 picks last. Manager 4 picks twice in a row.

More rounds keep flipping the direction. Odd rounds go from the first spot to the last. Even rounds go from the last spot back to the first.

Why is a snake draft fair?

If the order never changed, whoever picked first would pick first every round, and whoever picked last would always get what’s left. The snake fixes that. The first spot in round one becomes the last spot in round two. The last spot in round one gets two picks in a row.

Look at the diagram. Manager 1 gets picks 1 and 8. Manager 4 gets picks 4 and 5. Add up any manager’s two picks and you get 9.

It isn’t perfectly even, because someone still goes first. It spreads the good spots around. When you draft teams, the order matters even more: once a team is drafted, it’s yours, and nobody else in your league gets it.

How does a snake draft work on Windom Sports?

We call it a Live Draft. Here’s how it goes.

1

Everyone drafts live

Your group meets in the draft room and picks in turn. In team sports you draft whole real teams, not players. Each one goes to just one person in your league.

2

The order is set first

Your commissioner can randomize the order or set it by hand. If nobody sets it, it's randomized when the draft starts. Once it's locked, everyone can see it.

3

Every pick has a timer

Rank your teams ahead of time and the clock takes the highest one still on your list if time runs out. No list? It takes the highest ranked team still available.

4

Then you're done

After the draft there's nothing to manage. Scores and standings update on their own, and you score when your teams win.

Group size depends on the sport. A Live Draft takes 2 to 8 people for the NFL, 2 to 12 for college football, 2 to 7 for the NBA and 2 to 8 for the NHL. Bigger group? Salary Cap and Tiers have no draft, so any size works. See how Salary Cap works.

Why Windom Sports

  • You draft what can win. In team sports that's whole teams: NFL franchises, college programs, NBA and NHL teams, soccer clubs. In golf, tennis and racing it's the golfer, the player or the driver. Never a stat line.

  • Root for the scoreboard. When your teams win, you score. No lineups to set and no stat sheets to study.

  • A format built for each sport. Live Draft, Salary Cap and Tiers, each where it fits the sport.

  • Free for everyone, including the host. Free to play and free to host.

  • Draft once, then just read the email. Scores and standings update on their own.

Snake draft questions

What is a snake draft?

A snake draft is a draft where the pick order reverses every round. If you pick first in round one, you pick last in round two. It spreads the early picks and the late picks around, so no one gets the best spot every time.

Who picks first in a snake draft?

Whoever holds the first spot in round one. On Windom Sports your commissioner can randomize the order or set it by hand. If nobody sets it, it's randomized when the draft starts. Once it's locked, everyone in the league can see it.

What if I miss my pick?

The clock picks for you, so the draft never stalls for everyone else. If you've ranked your teams, it takes the highest one still on your list. If not, it takes the highest ranked team still available.

How many picks are in a snake draft?

One per person per round. The four-person, two-round diagram above is 8 picks, and a real draft just has more rounds. Every pick has a timer, and the clock picks for anyone who runs out of time, so the draft keeps moving.

Snake draft or salary cap?

Snake draft if the draft itself is the fun part and you want every team owned by exactly one person in your league. Salary Cap if you'd rather pick on your own time. There's no draft to schedule, and any size group can play.
